Social media privacy issues can be questionable when using any of the platforms that are on the net today. With the FBI lobbying for new legislation or adding to the current laws for phone tapping it brings privacy issues to the forefront of our minds. They are asking that platforms add a backdoor to tap into when they need to investigate questionable behavior. It is not a lot different than the laws that they currently use for phone taps.

Social media privacy issues should not be a problem for anyone that is using the internet for business and marketing. People using the internet for illegal activities such as child pornography and threats to homeland security are some of the reasons given by the FBI for the requested changes. They have asked that internet leaders support them in their endeavors by not opposing this legislation.

You hear the term “Going Dark” being thrown out there by the FBI. What this means is that the FBI surveillance is having difficulty keeping up with the changing communication technologies. The new legislation would require social networking sites to build code into the sites so that with justifiable cause the FBI could set up surveillance for evidence of illegal activities.

There are a lot of differences of opinions when it comes to adopting this new legislation. Some feel that the FBI should not require the social media networks to build in specific code that gives them the ability to literally spy on anyone at any time. Others feel that there needs to be a means to catch criminal activity and put a stop to it. Part of the reasoning behind the negative feelings is due to the request that instant messaging, VoIP and email users can also come under surveillance by law officials when providers go over a specific number of users.

Social media privacy issues should already be addressed by those using any of the available platforms. That is why most businesses have a social media policy in place. Always remembering that anything you say or show can be seen by anyone at any time helps to keep businesses on an even keel. Don’t over share things that you know must be kept confidential when using social media for business purposes.
