Voice is the newest phase of search, test, and calling. As we use our mobile devices more and more it has become increasingly apparent that typing is no longer the only way to go. Apple’s Siri is the poster child for this form of communication. With an iProduct you just speak naturally and the device will search for what you say, call who you want and do talk to text. Google has also dabbled in this type of programming as well. With Google Mobile Search and Google Navigate you can simply speak the destination or search topic you wish to delve into and Google will do it for you. Plus, Google is usable on any mobile platform. Now Yahoo wants to get in on the talk to search game.
Yahoo has long been a well-used and loved method of receiving e-mail, instant messages and news. The brains at this company have seen what Siri and Google have done and want to take it to the next level. In fact they are partnered with Carnegie Mellon University researchers to create what will become the search of the future.
Enter InMind
The project known as Project InMind seeks to take search by voice to a whole new level. If it works the way Yahoo and Carnegie Mellon University want it to it will not only search by voice but also be able to follow up with you through questions that are related to your latest search in query. Not only that but it will also use contextual searches similar to Google as well. What is Contextual Search? This is where you type or talk the search engine will try to fill in the blanks for you by giving you an ever changing list of options to search for. If you want to see this in action just think back to the last time you used Google to search on your PC or Mac.
Recently Yahoo acquired a mobile personalization start up named Aviate. This company created an app called Jybe. What Jybe does is use location, time and date to create a personalized home screen. This home screen will give you details about things like the weather in your area, any special events going on or any other info that may be pertinent to your preferences about that particular local area. Yahoo is also going to incorporate this type of search into Project InMind.
The master plan for Project InMind is to complete a thorough 5 year long research project before going into implementation. Yahoo has given Carnegie Mellon University access to their whole data bank to see where, how and what we as users search for. With all this info and research Yahoo hopes to give you a new way of getting the results you have been seeking.
